How can I creatively work more movement into my day?

Walking around while taking a phone call counts; so does taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from the store when you’re running errands, or squeezing in some squats or calf raises while you’re brushing your teeth.

When it comes to physical activity, changing your mindset about its purpose—and getting creative about how to weave more movement into your day—is a great first step (pun intended) toward making positive, lasting change. 

Along with sleep, nutrition, and hydration, exercise is a key pillar of your overall health.

Together, these four components—also known as the “Core 4”—form a sturdy foundation on which to create, and enjoy, a lifestyle that supports long-term health and wellbeing. 

Even if you don’t have time to fit in a complete workout every day, you can always make time for a few micro workouts—short bursts of activity ranging from 30 seconds to as long as 10 minutes—and enjoy the immediate benefits of improved mood, and increased energy.

Try these micro-workouts today

  • Try calf raises (10-20) any time you find yourself waiting in line
  • Do 10-15 sit to stand movements—stand up from your chair and sit back down slowly, without using your hands—every hour
  • Take a brisk walk around your office building, inside or out, or get up and walk around while you’re taking a call 
  • Get an ab workout right at your desk by sitting upright in your chair, holding the edge of your desk, and—with feet hovering over the floor—swiveling your chair from side to side 
  • Sneak in a few squats while waiting for your coffee to brew
