How do I know if I should be drinking more water?

Raise your hand if there’s an “emotional support water bottle” near you right now. (We bet it has really great stickers on it, if you’re anything like us).

If you have that water bottle handy, and if you’ve been sipping from it throughout your day… congratulations! You’ve already unlocked the power of hydration, one of four core elements that contribute to a healthier you. 

These four elements are known as—surprise!—”the Core 4”: hydration, nutrition, sleep, and exercise. Today, we’re talking about hydration, but we’ll get to the others in future posts… stay tuned! 

For your question specifically—“How do I know if I should be drinking more water?”—we’re going to get curious, and answer your question with a question: Are you fueling your body with what it needs? 

When to add more water

In general, our bodies are pretty great at telling us what they need. 

We experience hunger signals when we need to eat, notice tired signals when we need to sleep, feel restless if we haven’t moved in a while, and get thirsty if we need something to drink. 

In addition to feeling thirsty, you might even notice physical symptoms of dehydration, which can include: 

  • Headaches
  • Brain fog
  • Feeling hungry within an hour of eating 
  • Feeling irritable
  • Stiff, achy joints

If you’re regularly experiencing any/all of the above, we can confidently say: You could add some agua (water) to your day!

Ways to work in more water to your day

  • Create a “habit pairing,” like drinking a glass of water while you wait for your coffee to brew in the morning
  • Keep your standby Stanley (or other beverage container of choice) nearby, and regularly filled
  • Choose water to drink with your meals
  • Add in slices of fresh fruit to make your water look (and taste) more enticing

Water is one of the most powerful, transformative health tools available, whether you’re enjoying yours from the fridge in your kitchen, the tap in the breakroom or the bottle filler on the wall. 

Every time you take a sip, you’re giving your body exactly what it needs to function, clear out the old, and start fresh… and isn’t that a nice mental image to drink in?
